Ettore Sottsass

Ettore Sottsass was born in 1917 in Innsbruck as the son of an architect. He became a prominent architect and designer, graduating in architecture from the Polytechnic University of Turin in 1939. He established his own studio in Milan in 1947. Sottsass won his first Compasso D’Oro in 1959 for Olivetti’s computer mainframe Elea 9003. Over the years, he earned three more, with the last one in 1989 for the “Nuova Milano” cutlery, designed for Alessi.

He made a significant impact on the design world with the Memphis movement, involving numerous other masters. Ettore Sottsass passed away in December 2007. You can find an interview with him here: YouTube Interview.
