Third clock in the SiO2 series of clocks made of diatomaceous earth with the so-called “Araidashi” finish. Araidashi is a plastering technique in which gravel, pebbles and other grains are mixed with mortar. Before it hardens, the surface is washed away. In this clock, pure white crystalline limestone grains, known as “Kansuiseki,” are used. These pebbles reflect light in different ways.
The clock has a gently curved shape that changes light and shadow on the surface, accentuating the expression of the stone. Cleaning the surface without damaging the edges of the engraved numbers requires delicate craftsmanship, provided by the artisans of another Japanese company: “soil.”
Lemnos aimed to create a clock using traditional materials and techniques without excess or deficiency. There are four color variations: white (diatomite from Akita) and pink (diatomite from Noto), which show the natural colors of diatomite, and beige and gray, whose colors have been modified with pigments.
